Understanding the Signs of Substance Use in Teens and Adults

February 24, 2026

Whether you’re a parent, caregiver, friend, or just someone who cares, recognizing the signs of substance use in teens and adults can feel overwhelming. It’s not always easy to spot, especially since changes can be gradual or explained away as “normal” behavior. But knowing what to look for can help us offer support earlier, making a real difference in someone’s life.

First, let’s talk about behavioral changes. Sudden shifts in mood, withdrawal from family and friends, losing interest in hobbies, drop in school or work performance, and secretive behavior are all common signs. With adolescents, these changes might blend in with typical teenage challenges, but if they seem abrupt or more intense, it’s wise to be curious and have open conversations.

Physical signs are also something we can watch for. Bloodshot eyes, changes in sleep habits, unexplained weight loss or gain, poor hygiene, and unusual smells on breath or clothing may indicate substance use. Sometimes there are more subtle clues, like being unusually tired, hyperactive, or having trouble with coordination.

Mental health plays a big role in this conversation, too. Increased anxiety, bouts of depression, or extreme mood swings can happen at any age, but when paired with other signs, they might point to substance use. No one should feel ashamed about asking for help or expressing concern—it’s always better to check in than ignore your gut feeling.

Remember, noticing one sign doesn’t always mean there’s a substance use problem. But understanding the bigger picture can help us support each other and have heartfelt, honest conversations. Starting the dialogue can be tough, but it’s an important first step—and nobody has to do it alone.
